The unique personal adventure of a hot air balloon flight can be difficult to predict for those who have never experienced it. This page will hopefully help you prepare for the incredible journey.
Once you have scheduled your hot air balloon ride by calling Air Time Ballooning, the stage is set for one of the most incredible and wonderful experiences you will ever endure. You will meet the balloon pilot and crew at a designated location, and then be transported to a launch field chosen by the pilot. The pilot will choose a launch site for the balloon based on the wind conditions that day.
Now it's time to prepare the hot air balloon for inflation. The balloon equipment, which includes the balloon envelope, basket, burners, and inflation fan, will be unloaded from the chase vehicle. The balloon system components will be assembled by the pilot and crew. Passengers may be asked to assist in the inflation process, by holding the "mouth" of the balloon open to allow air to flow into the balloon. The air is moved into the hot air balloon envelope utilizing an 8 horsepower gasoline powered fan. Once the balloon is "cold inflated," the pilot will "go hot," and activate the powerful propane burners, which quickly heat the air in the balloon. The balloon goes from a lay down position, to standing straight up in a matter of only 20-30 seconds. Passengers will soon be asked to climb in the balloon basket. Remember to bring your camera!
We have liftoff! Once the passengers are in the balloon basket, the pilot applies enough heat to the balloon that it becomes buoyant, and gently rises into the air. While in the air, the only sound you are likely to hear is that of the burners being activated periodically to maintain altitude. You will fly from tree top level to about 1,500 feet above the ground during the flight, although the pilot may descend or ascend to other altitudes when necessary. You are welcome to take photos and video while in the balloon. Hot air balloon rides last approximately one hour, however you will probably be with the balloon team two and a half to three hours.
At the conclusion of the balloon ride, the pilot will set the balloon down, and deflate the air from the envelope. The pilot and crew will disassemble and pack the equipment, then take you back to the location you met the pilot prior to the balloon ride. You will depart having experienced the event of a life time!
